Peta shares with the school holidays finally over, it’s just me, my grocery list, and some much-needed alone time. I love shopping and cooking without hearing “I don’t like this” before the food even hits the table! 😂

As a work-from-home mum with two kids (ages 6 and 8), managing after-school activities, endless meetings, and keeping the household running is no small task.

So, I decided to try some new recipes from Zing Wellbeing Gut Health & Anti-Bloat Meal Plans (which is available to all Zing Wellbeing members).

These healthy recipes focus on healthy ingredients, are easy to prepare, family-friendly, and best of all, won’t break the bank.

Meal prep tips

Meal prep is key—not just for my sanity, but for keeping the fridge and freezer stocked with quick, easy-to-grab meals.

Let’s be real—on busy days, no one wants to spend hours in the kitchen. Everyone has different tastes, and what we feel like eating changes daily. That’s why meal prep is such a lifesaver.

I took about 3 hours to prep and cook five meals from the Zing Wellbeing meal plans, which made 25 adult-sized portions in total.

Pretty impressive, right? Even better, each meal costs less than $3 per serving!

Sweet Potato Frittata $2.54/serve

Loaded Sweet Potatoes $2.98/serve

Gut Healthy Bolognese (Served with wholemeal pasta) $2.19/serve

Turkey & Pineapple Quinoa Bowls $2.93/serve

Sticky Ginger Meatballs - FREE recipe here (served with brown rice/quinoa & broccoli) $2.66/serve

You could even cut costs further by using cheaper eggs/mince/pasta etc

Having everything prepped and ready to go in the fridge/freezer is such a relief when the inevitable “What’s for dinner?” question comes up, I don’t stress because there are plenty of options ready to heat and eat.

Plus, no more complaints about not feeling like what’s for dinner—there’s always something for everyone!

Meal prepping with Zing Wellbeing Meal Plans has been a game-changer. I can still serve nutritious, tasty meals without spending all day in the kitchen or stressing about what to make each night. And knowing the fridge and freezer are stocked means I’m prepared, even on the busiest days.

Meal prepping can feel like a daunting task, but with a few smart strategies, it can save you loads of time, reduce stress, and ensure you’re feeding your family healthy, delicious meals all week.

Here are my top meal prep tips to help you get started and keep your kitchen running smoothly:

Peta's budget meal tips

1. Plan Your Meals

Take a few minutes each week to plan your meals. This helps you avoid last-minute decisions and makes grocery shopping easier. Choosing easy to make recipes with few ingredients will save time and avoid complicated cooking processes

2. Batch Cook Staples

Cook big batches of versatile ingredients like:

  • Grains (rice, quinoa, etc.)
  • Proteins (chicken, beans, tofu)
  • Veggies (roast a few trays of veggies)

These can be used in multiple meals throughout the week.

3. Prep Ingredients in Advance

Chop veggies, portion out snacks, and do some of the cooking ahead of time. It makes dinner quicker and less stressful.

4. Cook Once, Eat Twice/Freeze Extras

Make enough dinner to have leftovers for lunch or another dinner. It saves time and reduces cooking during the week. Cook extra portions and freeze them for later. It’s great for busy days when you don’t have time to cook.

One thing I do need to invest in are good airtight storage containers that are microwave and freezer-safe. My tupperware seems to grow legs...

Here’s to more solo grocery trips, easy meals, and happy tummies around the dinner table!

Happy cooking, and may your grocery trips be peaceful!
