Diaphragmatic breathwork technique (belly breathing)

Diaphragmatic breathing is a breathing technique that focuses on using the diaphragm, the muscle beneath your lungs, to encourage slower, deeper breaths.

Instead of mainly lifting the chest when you breathe, the diaphragm contracts and allows your abdomen to gently rise as you inhale. As you exhale, the abdomen naturally falls.

How to practise it:

  1. Sit or lie comfortably and relax your shoulders.
  2. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen.
  3. Breathe in slowly through your nose, allowing your abdomen to gently expand.
  4. Slowly breathe out through your mouth, allowing your abdomen to fall.
  5. Continue for several slow, comfortable breaths without forcing the breath.

It can be a useful relaxation and mindfulness technique and may help promote a sense of calm and reduce tension.
