Warning over Ozempic like medication

Warning over Ozempic like medication

As the popularity of weight loss injections like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro continues to rise, new research is urging both medical professionals and users to approach these medications with care — especially when it comes to mental health.

These medications, originally developed for type 2 diabetes, mimic a hormone called GLP-1 that regulates appetite and blood sugar.

Their effectiveness in promoting weight loss has made them a go-to solution for many, including high-profile individuals. But now, scientists are raising red flags about potential psychological side effects.

But it is always important to note that all medications come with risk and this is the same with these types of medication.

🧠 A Link to Mental Health Concerns?

But a new international study suggests the medicines could mess with mood-regulating hormone dopamine

It means it could increase the risk of depression and suicidal thoughts, experts have warned.

The international study involving researchers from the US, Brazil, Iran, and Israel has found that GLP-1 receptor agonists may interfere with dopamine, a key chemical responsible for mood regulation.

The concern? Disrupted dopamine function could increase the risk of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts — particularly in those with pre-existing mental health conditions.

Dr Kenneth Blum, a neuroscientist from Ariel University, warns:

“We urge the medical community to proceed with caution to avoid a tragic wave of people dying to lose weight.”

And with over 2,000 people already joining online support groups to discuss panic attacks and anxiety while on the medication, it’s clear that many are experiencing serious emotional side effects.

📉 What the Science Is Saying

  • A study of 160,000 patients found that those taking weight-loss jabs were nearly 3x more likely to suffer from depression and suicidal behaviour.

  • The European Medicines Agency is now reviewing GLP-1 drugs following increased reports of psychiatric side effects.

  • Some researchers are even recommending genetic screening before prescribing these medications to help identify individuals at higher risk of emotional instability.

Despite these concerns, it's important to note that previous evaluations by the UK’s MHRA did not confirm a direct link between these drugs and suicide risk and 1000's of people use the drugs without any issue.

⚠️ Other Reported Side Effects

Beyond mental health, users have also reported:

  • Digestive issues (bloating, nausea, reflux)

  • Risk of pancreatitis, vision issues, and kidney problems

  • In rare cases, death — with 85 UK fatalities linked to these medications by early 2025 (though not all causes have been publicly disclosed)

💬 The Zing Wellbeing Perspective

At Zing Wellbeing, we know that weight loss is deeply personal — but it should never come at the cost of your mental health so it is good to be aware of all side affects. Our approach is about supporting women no matter what their situation and choices and we aim for a holistic approach:

  • 🌿 Health first, weight loss second: When you prioritise your wellbeing — through balanced eating, mindful movement, stress management, and community — weight loss becomes a by-product, not the obsession.

  • 🧘 Mindset shift: Our programs build emotional resilience, self-worth, and long-term habits — not quick fixes that can leave you feeling worse than before.

  • 🤝 Real support: We don’t offer one-size-fits-all solutions. We’re here to meet you where you are and help you move forward — safely, sustainably, and with compassion.

But we understand that many 1000's of people get great results using the weight loss medication and many women use our program alongside weight loss medication and weight loss surgery with a BIG focus on protein intake to reduce muscle loss.
