One mums weight loss injection story

One mums weight loss injection story

Rebecca, 47, is a mother of 3 and a grandmother to 2, from  Melbourne, Victoria.

Rebecca shares she has been on a weight loss journey for over 12 years. It has not been an easy journey, but it has been one where I have learnt a lot.

"I joined Zing Wellbeing last year in August, and I can say I was the one that would peek over the fence to see what everyone was doing, it was only recently that I knew I needed to start turning up and it was because of the wonderful ladies who were the April Zing  support squad and the supportive community.

Rebecca's weight loss journey

My journey has been a very long one. I have tried every diet there is, yes, I did Jenny Craig, Lite N Easy, Weight Watchers, and every fad in between.

Two years after my son was born, I saw a photo of myself, and this broke me.

To be honest, the best way to describe what I looked like was a blue M&M.

I am 150cm (five foot nothing)  and I weighed 112kg, I cried, I screamed at myself. How could I let this happen, and then I made an appointment to see my GP.

Weight loss surgery

Later that year, I had weight loss surgery (Lap-band).

I do not regret this at all, it is an amazing tool. I got down to 65kg in 2012, but then got very sick, I couldn’t eat or even drink water without being sick.

I knew something was wrong. Back to the surgeon, and we discovered I had developed a pouch, which is where all the food I was eating was pooling, and then I would be sick.

This was something I didn’t want my girls to see as they were at that impressionable age.

All the fluid was removed, and I could eat, and believe me, I did.

Over the years, all that weight came back tenfold.

I couldn’t use the lap-band as my mindset was wrong every time I got a little too tight, I thought the pouch was back. Yes, I still have the band and it has fluid in it, but I don’t use it to its potential.

Now I would recommend weight loss surgery to anyone as we are all different, but one thing I would advise them is to have something like this support group and Zing Wellbeing programs because I know if I had this at that time, I would have had a things in place to deal with my mental health.

The next step? Weight loss injections

Fast forward to October 2024 I weighed 96kg and no matter what I tried, I couldn’t lose the weight.

Again, I went back to my GP he prescribed Wegovy, the weight loss injection, this is also a tool to help, and it has, but joining this supportive group of women is what has helped more.

All the support these ladies give to complete strangers who are going through similar journeys is amazing. I am now down to 81.5kg.

My mental health is amazing, and I am starting to be consistent and showing up.

Rebecca's top tips

I still have a long way to go, but my mindset is in the right place.

I now take photos because the scales don't always move.
I even take my measurements.

I have come a long way, but I have learnt one thing and that is if your mental health is not on the same page you want to be, then it’s just not going to happen.

Always be kind to yourself and remember this is your journey no one else’s you take as long as you need on it. Like the tortoise and the hare, slow and steady wins the race.

Rebecca's 6 Week Health Challenge pledge

🌟I will be kind to myself it is not easy to walk outside your comfort zone and I know I may make mistakes but as long as I am kind to myself all will be great.
🌟 I will move my body daily and reach 6000 steps. I work in corporate and this isn’t always possible so as long as I do this at least 5 days out of 7 days as this will be achievable.
🌟I will make a new main meal and snack I would not normally eat by doing this I will be giving myself a new experience and then won’t get board with my meals ( I seem to lose interest in meal prep and this will keep me engaged as it will be something new)
🌟 I will go to the gym 3-4 times a week this is something I really want to maintain so this is really a goal because I have found when I exercise I feel so much better and I know I can take on the world.
🌟 The most important one of all is to support all you lovely on your amazing journey.
