5 Healthy Chocolate Treats

Choc Apple Nachos

Using dark chocolate is a healthier option than milk chocolate as it contains higher cocoa content which is rich in flavonoids which may help reduce inflammation, it generally has much less sugar, higher nutrient density, including iron, magnesium and fibre and is lower in fat and overall calories.

The apple and blueberries add natural sweetness from fruit plus fibre and sunflower seed butter adds healthy fats.

Serves 2

Ingredients

  • 1 apple
  • 1 tbsp sunflower seed butter
  • ¼ cup dark choc chips
  • ¼ cup blueberries

Arrange apple slices on a serving plate. Drizzle sunflower seed butter, dark choc chips and blueberries overtop.

Chocolate, Avocado and Almond Butter Puddings

Avocados are a good source of vitamin C and vitamin E, both of which are antioxidants that help to boost the immune system and protect the body from damage by harmful free radicals.

They easily accommodate any flavour profile they are teamed with so work well in both savoury and sweet foods.

In this pudding they add a luscious soft mouth feel with their healthy fats and take on the almond and chocolate flavours well.

Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 2 avocados
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • ½ cup almond milk
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder
  • ¼ cup almond butter

Method

Combine all ingredients in a food processor or blender and blend until smooth and creamy. You may need to occasionally scrape down the sides.

Divide into small bowls and enjoy!

High Protein Chocolate Fudge Protein Brownies

Banana offers a natural sweet tooth fix as it is amongst the sweetest of fruits. We still need to balance out the sugar that bananas hold by adding good fats and protein and we can do this with the addition of cashew butter and Zing’s plant based protein powder.

Cashew butter is high in healthy fats, protein and zinc plus adding cacao boosts the magnesium content of this recipe and ensures that chocolate fix is being met!

Serves: 9 slices

Ingredients

 Method

Pre-heat oven to 180C and line a small cake tin with baking paper. Place all ingredients into a bowl and mix until well combined. Pour batter into lined cake tin and bake for 15-20 minutes or until cooked through. Cool for 10 minutes before cutting.

Homemade Chocolate Ice-cream

This dairy free ice-cream will hit the spot with high protein and good fats from almond butter and coconut cream. Coconut is the ultimate fat. It keeps us full, satiated and helps stabilise blood sugar levels as it is slow burning fuel for your body.

It will help keep your mind switched on fighting brain fog and is great for your hair, skin and nails as well!

Serves 6

 Ingredients

  • ½ cup almond butter
  • 1 can coconut cream (400ml)
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 tbsp dark choc chips

 Method

Cover a baking tray with baking paper. Add all ingredients, except dark chocolate chips, into a food processor and blend for 60 seconds or until smooth. Turn the ice cream maker on and pour the mix in while it is spinning. Let it churn for up to 30 minutes until it becomes a firm ball. Place in the freezer for at least 1 hour to set before eating. Keep in the freezer in an air tight container.

Greek Yoghurt Choc Mousse

Cacao is the unrefined, unheated version of cocoa, so it retains more nutritional value than the heated version and has a more distinctive bitter flavour. Cacao is a natural antidepressant and stress reliever!

Cacao is full of antioxidants which keep our mind sharp and our skin young. Plus, it’s the highest magnesium food in the world which is important in preventing cramps and headaches (hence why we girls crave it around our cycles!) as well as helping with stress and anxiety. It is the most mineral rich superfood, and is energising and mood enhancing since it increases serotonin levels in the brain (our feel-good chemical).

It has almost double the ORAC value (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) as acai berry and is rich in polyphenols to help reduce cholesterol and support heart health.

Adding Greek yoghurt gives a creamy texture but is also high in protein, probiotics, calcium, B12 and is rich in healthy fats.

Serves 3

Ingredients

  • 100g dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 ½ cups Greek yoghurt
  • ½ cup cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of sea salt

Serve of Zing Wellbeing choc protein powder (optional)

Method

Melt dark chocolate in a microwave safe bowl in 30 second bursts, stirring often. Let it cool slightly. Using a mixer with whisk attachment or hand whisk combine the chocolate with the rest of the ingredients and whip until it is smooth and creamy. Portion the mousse into containers or jars and place in the fridge overnight to set.
