The impact of negative comments on social media: Why kindness matters
In today's world of social media, where many people regularly share personal milestones, achievements, and expressions of self-love, it’s worrying how often negative comments creep into the conversation.
Whether it’s a picture of someone’s weight loss journey, their hard work at the gym, a photo showing off a new outfit, or just a moment of self-expression, it seems that no one is immune from criticism.
Comments like “you’re too fat,” “too thin,” “too muscly,” “too pale,” or “you look better before,” may seem like harmless opinions to some, but their impact on the person receiving them can be far-reaching and incredibly damaging.
I have also had all kinds of nasty comments and messages directed at me and I have also spoken to 100's of women who have had the same thing happen and it is not nice and has a significant effect on our mental wellbeing.

The Mental and Emotional Toll of Negative Comments
Research consistently shows the significant impact that negative comments on social media can have on an individual's mental health.
A study published in Body Image (2017) highlighted that women who received negative comments on their photos or posts reported feeling more self-conscious and less satisfied with their bodies. These comments can trigger feelings of shame, anxiety, and low self-esteem, especially when they pertain to physical appearance.
For example, commenting that someone is "too bony" or "needs to lose more weight" can perpetuate harmful beauty standards and reinforce societal pressures to meet unrealistic body ideals. Such comments create a toxic cycle where individuals feel judged for being themselves, ultimately diminishing their self-worth.

One study found that negative body comments, particularly those that focus on weight or appearance, can lead to body dissatisfaction, which is often linked to eating disorders and other serious mental health issues such as depression and anxiety (Grabe, Ward, & Hyde, 2008).
This issue is compounded by the anonymity and distance that social media provides, allowing people to express harsh opinions without facing the immediate consequences of their words.
It’s important to remember that what might seem like an innocuous comment can significantly affect someone’s confidence and mental wellbeing.
The power of positive comments: How kindness can change everything
Conversely, offering a positive comment can have a profound impact on someone’s self-esteem.
Complimenting someone on their hard work at the gym, praising their outfit choice, or simply appreciating their confidence can boost their mood and make them feel seen, valued, and supported.

Studies show that positive reinforcement and encouragement lead to better psychological outcomes.
According to a 2018 study in The Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, receiving positive feedback has been shown to increase self-compassion and reduce negative self-judgments.
Encouragement, especially from strangers on social media, can provide much-needed emotional support and even foster a sense of community.
When we offer kind comments, we are not only helping to uplift the individual in the image but also contributing to a culture of inclusivity and support. These actions help create a space where people feel empowered to be themselves without fear of judgment.
