What Happened When I Quit Diet Coke
Sally shares how she kicked her nasty coke zero habit and improved her health for good.

What Happened When I Ditched Diet Coke (And What I Drink Instead)
For years, Diet Coke was part of my daily routine. It was my “pick-me-up,” my afternoon reset, and sometimes even my little moment of calm in a busy day. I never really questioned it after all, it’s zero sugar, right?
But recently, I decided to take a break. Not forever… just to see what would happen.
Turns out, quite a lot changed.

Why I Decided to Quit
Like many of us juggling busy lives, I started noticing a few things:
I was relying on it for energy
I craved it more than I liked to admit
My hydration wasn’t great (coffee + Diet Coke ≠ water!)
So I set myself a simple goal: ditch Diet Coke for a few weeks and see how I feel.

What Happened
1. The cravings were real (at first)
The first few days were the hardest. That familiar taste and caffeine hit? My body definitely noticed it was gone. I had mild headaches and found myself reaching for “something” out of habit.
2. My energy became more stable
After about a week, I stopped having those afternoon crashes. Instead of spikes and dips, my energy felt more consistent throughout the day.
3. I started drinking more water
Without Diet Coke as my default, I naturally drank more water — and honestly, I felt better for it. Less sluggish, less bloated.
4. Reduced bloating
This was a big one. Carbonation can cause bloating for some people, and I didn’t realise how much it was affecting me until I stopped.
5. My taste buds changed
This surprised me most. After a couple of weeks, overly sweet drinks tasted too sweet. I started enjoying simpler, more natural flavours.

The Health Benefits of Cutting Back
While an occasional Diet Coke is unlikely to harm most people, reducing daily intake may offer benefits like:
- Better hydration (more water, less reliance on caffeinated drinks)
- Improved gut comfort (less bloating and gas for some)
- Reduced artificial sweetener intake
- More stable energy levels
- Better dental health (less acid exposure)
It’s not about fear — it’s about balance and awareness.

What you can drink instead
This is often the key. Removing something is much easier when you replace it with something you enjoy.
1. Sparkling water + fresh fruit
Still fizzy, still refreshing — but without the additives. I love adding lemon, lime, or berries.
2. Herbal teas (hot or iced)
Peppermint, chamomile, or fruity blends give flavour without caffeine.
3. Kombucha (occasionally)
Great for that fizzy feel with a bit of gut-friendly goodness — just watch the sugar content.
4. Infused water
Cucumber + mint or orange + ginger makes water feel a bit more special.
5. Green tea
A gentler caffeine option that doesn’t give the same crash.
6. Protein water or gut health shot
Whip up a batch of the gut health shot and reach for that when you feel a craving.
If you’re someone who reaches for Diet Coke daily, you don’t need to give it up completely. But experimenting with a break can be really eye-opening.
Start small:
Swap one can a day
Add more water
Find alternatives you actually enjoy
It’s not about restriction — it’s about feeling better in your body.
