But we digress. Let's hear from Emily about 6 Reasons Why Women Over 40 Should Start Strength Training (Especially During Perimenopause)

Why Women Over 40 Should Start Strength Training

As a Mum and fitness instructor, I know how challenging it can be to find time for yourself, let alone start a new fitness routine.

But trust me, incorporating just 1 or 2 strength training sessions into your weekly routine can make a world of difference, especially if you are approaching or going through perimenopause.

Here’s why:

1. Bone Health

Strength training is like giving your bones a big hug! During perimenopause, our estrogen levels drop, which can lead to weaker bones and a higher risk of osteoporosis.

But just like muscles, bones get stronger when we make them work.

By lifting weights, you're not only boosting bone density but also improving flexibility and balance.

This is super important as we get older to keep us steady and strong.

2. Muscle Mass

Ever feel like you're losing strength as you age? That's completely normal, but it doesn't have to be inevitable.

Strength training helps combat muscle loss and keeps you physically functional and mobile.

Imagine being able to carry your kids, lift shopping bags, and travel with heavy suitcases without a second thought.

Plus, there's nothing like the confidence boost you get from feeling strong and capable.

3. Metabolism

One of the amazing benefits of building muscle is that it revs up your metabolism.

As we age, especially after 40, our muscle mass naturally declines, which can slow down our metabolism.

But by incorporating strength training into your routine, you can preserve and even rebuild muscle fibers.

This means you'll burn more calories throughout the day, making weight management a bit easier and reducing the risk of metabolic disorders.

4. Mental Health

We all know exercise is great for our mood, and strength training is no exception.

It can help alleviate anxiety, depression, and those pesky mood swings that often come with perimenopause.

Just like with cardio or Pilates, strength training releases those feel-good endorphins that make us feel happier, more relaxed and less stressed.

5. Cardiovascular Health

Did you know that lifting weights can also be good for your heart? Strength training helps improve

cholesterol levels and reduces blood pressure, supporting overall heart health.

Considering heart disease is a major risk for women, especially as we age, incorporating weightlifting into your routine is a fantastic way to keep your heart healthy.

6. Joint Health

Finally, let's talk about joints. Strengthening the muscles around your joints provides better support and can reduce the risk of pain and injury.

Strength training helps build stronger ligaments and tendons, improving joint stability.

Plus, when you train safely and with proper form, you're less likely to get injured

in your everyday activities so you can keep doing those things you love for longer.

If you're over 40 and especially if you're going through perimenopause, now is the perfect time to start strength training.

It's never too late to invest in your health and well-being. Train for your 70 year old body!
