Busy Mum of 3 shares her Budget tips for feeding a large family

Michelle has shared with us how she feeds her hungry boys on a budget!

Michelle has at minimum, three hungry growing boys still living at home to feed at meal times with other drop-ins quite regularly. She shares with us how she manages to feed her family.

"Alongside myself, there’s the boys…2 teens and 1 preteen, and there are always extra to feed too.

They are all into their sports, so we are always packing extras for the 3 nights of training, and then snacks for footy days (this week it will be for both days of the weekend)."

This was a big pantry/freezer school snacks/lunches restock and then there was the normal fridge fortnightly shop.

All up Michelle spent $610.65 for 4-6 weeks of shopping.

First job, was to clean out the fridge. Dollar wise food wastage was not that big, which I was super pleased with.

Eggs are just non existent anywhere at the moment so I’m hoping to find some from the farmers around.

Just got the boys off to bed and already for school, so now my next job is to sort and prep my fridge. Including snacks…

Oh and silly me in my tired way automatically picked up the boys cracker snacks because they were on special…

I was really pleased with the cost of my groceries as these pantry staples will last approximately 4 weeks.

The fridge and freezer shopping is between a week or 2.

There was a fortnight’s worth of meat.

I will pretty much only have to buy some choc chips, bread, milk and fruit over the next fortnight. Oh and I’m going to treat myself to some fresh seafood.

Part of the reason I have been able to do this is because I’ve been pretty much only making Zing Wellbeing meals/recipes, following the meal plans and not buying randomly.

I had saved at least $375 last fortnight from my grocery bill. (I hope that makes sense)
Anyways that’s my day on a plate.

I’m feeling all sorts of pride at this moment.

Budget recipes Michelle loves to cook from Zing Wellbeing

Lamb Tabbouleh Tortillas $3.04 per serve

Big double thumbs up from all the boys and a very strong yes please when I asked if it’s a make again recipe.

Ok, so it was supposed to be Monday's meal, but turns out we are having it on Wednesday.

The cottage cheese on top was just the bomb diggity.

Plenty of leftovers because I made it on wraps, thinking “oh, they can’t be that filling”
I was wrong!

If meals like this are what Zing Welbeing is about, then I’m convinced it’s a good thing.

  • Family friendly

Week 2 of the 6 Week Challenge

Spending only a couple of hours in the kitchen, I have lunches prepped, some snacks prepped and some zingy gut well-being smoothie shots prepped.

I’ve made/prepped from the delicious Mediterranean meal plan for week 2.

  • Fresh fruit and eggs
  • Mediterranean chicken wrap
  • Smoked salmon and avocado wrap
  • Boiled egg and apricots
  • Zingy gut well-being being smoothie shot
  • Spinach and egg breakfast wrap
Tonight I’m doing yoghurt and berries, the walnuts for the banana and walnuts.

I’ve also made various varieties of the wraps using the teriyaki chicken and made some delicious rice paper rolls and some sushi.

Plus restocked the fridge so it’s all ready for the week.

I really feel like cooking fresh dinners this week so that’s the plan.
Now all that’s left to do is pack the dishes away.

Michelle shares her top meal prep tips

Try and do similar style recipes and recipes that you can make into other meals.
Eg boiled rice for butter chicken then becomes fried rice.

Start with a clean kitchen and keep a sink full of soapy water.
Don’t try and do too much.
Remember to eat and drink.

I personally do family-size meals and then take a couple of serves out for individual meals.
I also try and do meals one day, snacks/dessert a different day.

Most importantly, the best kind of prep is the prep that you will use or that makes it easier for you. If cutting up veggies helps, then that’s enough.

If making sandwiches helps, then do that.
